To me, last good ubuntu was Gutsy, and maybe Hardy. It goes downhill since then. I'm currently on a 64-bit Intrepid, with ATI binaries, and had to compile my own mplayer to get any watchable video at all. VLC's sound drops out every 30 seconds. Gxine is flat out unusable. Ioquake had no sound before some alsa compat thing was installed. Totem as a default player must be a punishment for bad karma. Feisty had font problems, initrd problems, I remember at least 2 times after the updates the machine would not boot.. :) I love Ubuntu that's for sure, but I'm going to try out Lenny to see if Debian reclaimed it's pride.

Funny seeing this article after making a similar decision. The deciding factor for me was being okay with the idea that this set of software can become as dated as it wants. If it's this stable and does everything that I want I'm sold.

sgfxi works very well for nVidia, in fact, much better than for ATI in my experience.

For nvidia, it has a range of options, including a new one, -B, that checks and installs latest nvidia beta driver for your specific card.

Very easy.

Also does Debian style installs, the debian way that is, if you want, with the -s option. But usually the nvidia downloads are more reliable.

Just had a quick read through the script, looks like it should work fine from what I can see (Although I haven't exactly scrutinized it). Unless you're trying to compile the NVidia drivers with a different version of gcc to the one you compiled your kernel with there usually aren't too many problems, when you are trying to do that however, it becomes a bit of a nightmare, especially if you can't get hold of the previous version of gcc, then you're looking at a kernel re-compile.

You should take a look at http://smxi.org/sg/sgfxi its a script to install ATI and Nvidia drivers. I used it for my ATI card so can't really vouch for the Nvidia side of things. Would be interested in your perspective as I'm also running Lenny.
